Indie authors can choose to publish their books in eBook format either before or after releasing a paperback edition. However, publishing both formats simultaneously can increase overall sales, particularly for paperbacks.

Publishing on Kindle and Smashwords

Through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), you can publish your book in Kindle format. If you are unable to convert your manuscript to eBook format, several services can assist with conversion. Amazon also provides a helpful guide called Building Your Book for Kindle for those who prefer to do it themselves.

Publishing through Smashwords allows your eBook to reach all other major online booksellers, including Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Kobo. Amazon will assign an ASIN for your Kindle edition, while Smashwords will assign an ISBN (or you can purchase one from Bowker). Remember: each format of your book requires its own identifier number.

KDP Select and Exclusivity Considerations

Many indie authors choose to publish exclusively on Kindle via KDP Select, which allows books to go free for up to 5 days every 90-day period. This can increase downloads and improve your Amazon sales rank.

However, KDP Select comes with exclusivity limitations:

  • Your book cannot be distributed to other retailers or eBook platforms such as OverDrive, widely used in libraries.

  • You cannot participate in Library Journal’s selfE program, which boosts library exposure.

  • Limiting distribution reduces your potential audience, as not all readers own a Kindle or use the Kindle app.

eBook Pricing Strategies

Pricing your eBook depends on several factors, including subject, genre, and book length. Generally:

  • Fiction books: $2.99–$3.99

  • Nonfiction books: $4.99–$5.99

Lower pricing can increase visibility and readership, while higher pricing may increase profit per sale. Personally, I prefer to keep prices low to grow awareness and readership rather than focus on immediate profits.

For authors with multiple titles, consider making one book permanently free (perma-free). This strategy can significantly increase exposure and help grow your audience—arguably the most important goal for indie authors.
